INTERNATIONAL REACH OF CAREY
More than 450 pastors in Kenya are Carey graduates. The majority serve in two independent African denominations. Carey works in a unique way with national churches and CBM through coaching leaders dealing with complex issues: poverty, ethnic violence and AIDS. Carey Institute provides theological training for pastors and development leaders together as a cohort in Kenya, Rwanda, Congo and South Sudan. They study integral mission: character & call, spiritual formation, and practical ministry.
Carey currently offers theological education programs in East Africa for denominational leaders from Kenya, Rwanda, Congo, and South Sudan. These men and women strain under the burdens of leadership.South Sudan is the world’s newest economy; torn apart by ethnic violence and hunger. Rwanda is commemorating the twentieth anniversary of their nation’s genocide. Eastern Congo is bearing the burden of 5 million deaths due to pervasive gender based violence against women. Kenya is struggling with a 60% unemployment rate affecting young adults. This reality is a time bomb waiting to explode.
“I have climbed the ladder of leadership in the Africa Christian Church and Schools Denomination in Kenya. I have been a parish pastor, education director, deputy general secretary, and now general secretary of our denomination. I thank God for the good foundation I received from Carey. I graduated with a Certificate in Ministry in 1998. This degree allowed me to enter St. Paul’s college in Nairobi from which I graduated in 2001. Today I am pursuing a Doctor in Ministry through a Carey Program in Africa. My research is on youth inclusion in the leadership structures of my denomination. We are deeply indebted to Carey and its supporters for their contribution to leadership training in East Africa.“
ACCESSIBLE | PRACTICAL | TRANSFORMATIONAL
Carey is working with CBM’s African Church partners to provide training at the Masters and Doctor of Ministry levels. Cohorts gather twice a year for intensive periods of study. Readings and assignments are geared to the contextual needs of their country and churches. Research and thesis work is supervised by Canadians or International Scholars who can provide useful knowledge and direction for their work.
YOUR PARTNERSHIP IS IMPORTANT
Carey is committed to God’s mission in Canada and the world. Expenses are monitored carefully in an effort to keep student fees accessible. Carey does not receive government funding, therefore Carey programs depend on the support of individuals and churches to supplement student fees. Carey’s international work in particular depends on the generosity of those who give to Carey.
