Liturgy and Lectionary
Liturgical Year (aka the Church Calendar)
The Church calendar is an annual cycle of celebrations (or feasts) interspersed with ‘Ordinary Time.’
The Year begins with Advent, a four-week season which anticipates the birth of Jesus Christ. The birth of Jesus is celebrated at Christmas, followed by Epiphany (from Greek, meaning “to reveal”) and Jesus’ baptism. The first season of Ordinary Time falls between Epiphany and Lent.
Lent is traditionally a penitential season of purification and contemplative prayer. This is a time to meditate upon the Passion of Jesus Christ. Holy Week includes Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday, and Easter Sunday. This week moves through the events which happened in last week of Jesus’ life, including his death and resurrection. Following Easter is the second season of Ordinary Time.
Revised Common Lectionary
A searchable database of scripture readings for every day and season of the church calendar. It is built on a three-year cycle which moves through the entire Bible in three years and it also includes occasional artistic and iconographic resources.
