All new Master of Divinity Students are required to attend the Graduate Studies Orientation, held annually in September. The Graduate Studies Orientation introduces the learning objectives of the degree program and prepares students to re-enter the academic world while remaining involved in practical ministry. It provides a foundation for the process of discernment of ministry gifts and skills, and the deepening of Christian character, which are integral to readiness for ministry. Various assessment tools are a part of this process.
The Orientation immediately follows a four-day intensive for the course SPIR 500 Spiritual Formation. It is recommended that all students attending Orientation plan to take the SPIR 500 intensive also.
At Carey’s Graduate Studies Orientation, you can expect the following:
- Get to know the faculty
- Eat lunch with your faculty advisor (Carey graduates cite faculty as one of the three most important influences on their educational experience)
- Understand how all components of the MDiv program fit together
- Learn which courses anchor the MDiv program
- Create a personalized academic plan
- Begin to use the discernment tools identified for your deepening self-understanding and vocational discernment
- Learn stories of other Carey students
- Worship together
- Play beach volleyball (over a log!)
- Learn skills for effective life and study as a mature student
- Gain confidence for developing valuable writing and reading strategies
- Build community
- Laugh together and pray together

Testimonial:
“One great thing about Carey’s online programs is that it couples good flexibility with interaction with the professor and fellow students. This setting has empowered me to work through my MDiv as an already full time pastor while maintaining quality time with my wife and children. Since Christ-likeness is the goal of discipleship, I am truly blessed by Carey’s emphasis on spiritual development and personal character as foundational for Christian leadership.” – Jason Johnson of Brownfield, Alberta, Carey MDiv program
