WHAT IS GENERATIONAL MISSION?
There is an emerging opportunity in the next 25 years to serve a generation of older adults (55+) in need of physical, social and spiritual support. An estimated 25% of those living in many Canadian communities will be over 65 years old by 2031. Many communities have already surpassed these projections. This is unprecedented in Canada providing the greatest opportunity for generational mission; service to an aging population through the ministry of the local church.
TIME TO CHAT
The Centre for Healthy Aging Transitions developed from Carey Institute’s exploration of Older Adult Resourcing (OAR). CHAT began 2 years ago with 4 partners: Beulah Garden Homes Society, Canadian Baptists of Western Canada, CBWC Foundation, and Carey Institute. Together, they have provided initial seed funding, staff time, dialogue, discernment, and planning for ministry initiatives. Since 2012, CHAT has been facilitating a faith-informed approach to healthy aging and life’s transitions through seminars, website development, denominational workshops, and a credit course through Carey Theological College.
- Provide biblically based resourcing opportunities for individuals, pastors, and church leaders.
- Commit to finding and sharing necessary resources through our website and other social media.
- Mobilize a transformative movement promoting awareness of how older adults (55+) can contribute to life.
Every 10 seconds someone in North America becomes a senior
This reality has inspired both fear and hope. CHAT seminars and symposiums are designed to resource those needing to address the issues associated with aging. These resources serve older adults as well as those working with them: pastors, counsellors, social workers, and health care providers. In light of the reality of aging, CHAT engages the issues of vocation, meaning, security and spirituality from a Christian perspective.
WHO IS MY NEIGHBOUR?
CHAT is exploring a ministry potential that could provide a new way of networking churches, leaders, and faith based organizations. The Vancouver Foundation funded a recent research project identifying the most urgent social need in our communities today is loneliness and isolation. The local church is able to exemplify the presence and compassion of Christ to those who are often left alone to cope with the complexities of aging and those who care for older adults. CHAT has identified the issues and will continue to encourage the local church to discern, pray and respond to our generational mission.
All funding for CHAT has relied heavily upon seed money from our partners and the administrative support budget from the Carey Institute. This has allowed CHAT to promote and deliver seminars across Western Canada on a break-even basis covering costs for educational resources, travel, and honorariums for facilitators. CHAT is also in transition from an opportunity based project to a thriving ministry resource available to the local church. With increasing website innovation, the appointment of a CHAT Director, grant/proposal research, and curriculum development we must find new ways to sustain our overall reach.
Older Adults often invest in ministries that are relevant to them and their needs. CHAT’s development phase offers an opportunity to invest in future resourcing.
