So here is Barbara Mutch’s vote for best “Book for the Beach.” I have enclosed her entire letter because all the words are so “her!”
Good afternoon, Paddy Person.
I love being invited to suggest a book for beach reading! The only problem is selecting which book out of all the delicious possibilities. I have decided to choose The Book Thief by Marcus Zusak, if only for the reasons that it is a heart-expanding book and I completed it by a pool in San Antonio several years ago – so not technically a beach, but a Texas poolside in the spring sunshine. Here is my description:
“Imagine a story about an illiterate girl who longs so passionately to read that she steals books though she cannot read them. Then make Death the book’s narrator. What you get is a book shot through with pure beauty and pure destruction, a heart-expanding tale “trying to find beautiful moments in an ugly time.” It is Marcus Zusak’s The Book Thief and it’s worth ★★★★. It will capture your heart.”
