Books for the Beach (Axel Schoeber)

Why would I be surprised? The church historian (just got his Ph.D. to complement his D.Min.) would like to sit beachside with John Calvin. Some of you may prefer “Crossroads” by Paul Young of “The Shack” fame, or the novel “A Secret Kept” by Tatiana De Rosnay or even Wayne Muller’s super read, “Sabbath.” But whose to say that sand, sea and Calvin don’t get along just fine.

Bruce Gordon’s biography on John Calvin entitled simply, “Calvin.” Gordon presents the famous reformer as a real person, with actual weaknesses! This biography helps us realize history didn’t have to turn out the way it did. Axel rates this a ★★★★ if you love history; ★★★, if you don’t.

It seems to me that this would be a great time to discover the humanity in history.
